Yamaha RX-V385 vs Onkyo TX-SR393

Yamaha RX-V385 review

5.1-class AV receiver, power 5 x 70 W at 6 Ohms features Yamaha's exclusive CINEMA DSP technology that supports HD Audio playback (Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, and others), providing natural and expansive audio visualization. On board the device are four HDMI inputs and one output. Acoustical terminals with the option of bi-amping front speakers in configurations 2.1 or 3.1 deserve special attention. According to Yamaha, a separate bass and treble amplification scheme allows for more powerful and clear sound. Yamaha RX-V385

Onkyo TX-SR393 review

With a power of 155 watts per channel (6 ohms), the TX-SR393 can be configured with various spatial audio options. Onkyo TX-SR393 is equipped with Dolby Atmos and DTS: X decoders, which are not only capable of processing these formats in 3.2.2 configuration, but also create virtual surround sound from any Dolby track. This gives the multi-channel soundtrack additional expressiveness, creating the effect of being in a real movie theater. For convenient surround sound tuning, the Onkyo TX-SR393 has an AccuEQ auto-calibration system with AccuReflex extension for accurate 3D format processing. The AV receiver uses AKM's multi-channel DAC with 32 bit / 384 kHz parameters. Onkyo TX-SR393

Yamaha RX-V385 pros & cons

Pros

  • Setup with the included mic was so cool
  • It outputs slightly amplified sound through speakers as it should

Cons

  • The one concern I have is the bottom of the unit gets extremely hot during use (or even just when turned on)
  • Bunch of useless presets lacking any real options for fine tuning

Onkyo TX-SR393 pros & cons

Pros

  • A particular tweak I really like is the Level Calibration, which allows you to adjust the volume of each speaker set
  • Another thing I like about this receiver is the unamplified line-level out port

Cons

  • When I called tech support I was told that "this is not a universal remote" and you couldn't program it
