SVS SB-3000 - best overall

Our rating
8.3/10

SVS SB-3000

SVSound introduced two new subwoofers that are part of the 3000 Series. The SB-3000 (closed design) and PB-3000 (with port) models are positioned as high-end products with the flagship 16-Ultra technology, but the manufacturer emphasizes the relatively reasonable prices of the new subwoofers.

The SB-3000 is the best subwoofer under 1000 available for 2020. Spectacular bass, well below the hearing line, is, at the same time, very accurate and full of detail, all at a unique price.

In order to provide excellent reference bass sound, the SVS 3000 Series combines the sophisticated technology known from the flagship 16-ultra Series subwoofers with innovative solutions.

The all-new, 13-inch, high-travel diaphragm SVS speaker with a dual 11 kg toroidal engine delivers a massive sound that will fill the entire room while offering you the lowest frequencies while maintaining complete control and accuracy.

SVS SB-3000

The Sledge STA-800D2 amplifier (800 W RMS, peak power 2500 V, MOSFET transistors) will allow you to effortlessly directly connect the speaker to the maximum levels of membrane tilt to fill the room with pulsating, distortion-free bass.

The manufacturer pays special attention to the proprietary driver design: a lightweight aluminum membrane with a double ferrite magnet for “extreme sound pressure.”

The sophisticated 50 MHz DSP from Analog Devices is the most precise digital processor ever used in subwoofers. It provides the highest fidelity and sound quality through advanced DSP settings and optimized frequency response.

The cases of both models are made of MDF double thickness for a minimum level of resonance. As for the finish, the subwoofers are available in a matte black finish with a wooden texture. The SB-3000 is also available in black gloss (for a fee).

Sonos SUB - best wireless

Our rating
6/10

Sonos SUB

The active subwoofer Sonos SUB is designed to bundle Sonos audio systems that require additional bass support.

The original shape of the subwoofer enclosure is due to its design - the device uses two counter-directional speakers working on a common central cavity. Due to this, the developers managed to solve several problems at once and, first of all, to make the sub-insensitive to the installation location in the room. The Sonos SUB subwoofer can even be installed along walls or furniture without sacrificing bass quality. In addition, the speakers mutually cancel out the vibrations of the cabinet walls that they create, which makes the Sonos SUB sound unpainted even at high volume. The subwoofer can be placed vertically or horizontally, which is very convenient.

Each speaker is connected to its own Class D amplifier, which ensures high bass power without significant heating of the device itself. To control the sound of Sonos SUB, a DSP is used with software settings made through a special application. The device has an

Sonos SUB

Ethernet connector for connecting to the Sonos system, and when using the optional Sonos Bridge, the entire kit can also work from a home router. The subwoofer housing has deep internal damping, and all the connectors are mounted on the bottom panel in such a way as to make the connection as inconspicuous as possible.

Talking about wireless models at this price range Sonos Sub is the best home subwoofer under 1000. Connect the subwoofer to the Sonos system by pressing a single button on the device. The device is optimally matched to work with PLAYBAR, CONNECT speakers: AMP, PLAY 5, 3, 1. Automatic sound equalization system. All components of the system will be optimally tuned. This subwoofer can be used to create both stereo and multi-channel audio systems. Thanks to the high-quality exterior with black piano lacquer and the modern design, Sonos SUB fits perfectly into the residential interior.

Key specs

Pros

  • Hi-Fi. Speakers sound better than the multi-room
  • The Bright LED can be configured to turn on/off via the Sonos app

Cons

  • The app is clunky and looks outdated

SVS SB-2000

Our rating
7.3/10

SVS SB-2000

The SVS SB-2000 Subwoofer is the SVS best-selling subwoofer with a combination of power, precision, flawless transient response, uncompromising musicality, and intelligent processing in a relatively compact package that integrates easily into any system. Featuring

Ultra Series technology, the SB-2000 lives up to expectations and delivers unrivaled performance for a sealed subwoofer anywhere in its price range, claiming to be a decent subwoofer for home theater.

The SVS SB-2000 achieves a stunning 19-240 Hz frequency response from a compact, sealed enclosure. The weight of the subwoofer, its compact size and restrained, but elegant appearance make it easy to move and mix it with any listening environment without sacrificing the power and volume that we expect from massive subwoofers. Not a small performer, the SB-2000 matches or exceeds subwoofer output levels twice its size and weight. A completely new driver and amplifier, a sealed enclosure, and an updated setup allow you to use the SB-2000 to achieve levels of articulation, musicality, dynamics, and bottomless expansion, unsurpassed in other compact subwoofers.

SVS SB-2000

The SVS SB-2000 subwoofer is based on the newly designed 12-inch 2000 series driver with two high-quality ferrite magnets and an FEA-optimized motor for almost no performance distortion even at the most extreme drive levels.

The DSP Sledge STA-500D Amplifier for SB-2000 Subwoofer boasts features typically found in subwoofers that cost two or three times the cost—conservatively rated at RMS power of 500 watts and peak dynamic power of more than 1,100 watts. The advanced DSP in the amplifier includes an array of filters and volume, gain and phase controls for fine-tuning performance. Innovation does not end there.

Key specs

Pros

  • The beautiful appearance of the device is maintained even when the dust screen is removed
  • Dark coloring gives the device the appearance of an unremarkable household appliance

Cons

  • The bottom legs are a bit flimsy

SVS PB-2000

Our rating
7.3/10

SVS PB-2000

For my taste, the PB-2000 is not the most beautiful subwoofer. However, this does not mean that there is not much love. The medium density MDF cabinet is finished in black ash and decorated with artificial wood on the sides. The front is equipped with a removable steel grill, and do not worry, it does not resonate. Screw-in rubber feet complete the look with an extensive rear panel that holds everything you need to find.

Again, I don't like the look of this subwoofer for my taste. However, it’s easy to appreciate what SVS did here. The body is durable, the finish is beautiful, and the radiator grill is durable, protecting all the goodies inside. Yes, everything in this subwoofer is great, but in different ways. It feels like SVS has put together a lot of designs that don't work. However, much of this comes down to personal tastes.

However, everything else appears to make this one of the best subwoofers. The central element of this kit is a 500 W RMS amplifier with a nominal power of 1100 W for dynamic loads. The rear panel has a 0.5 W standby mode, a customizable low-pass filter, and phase control, that allows you to set the perfect balance for all the other speakers in your system. Add to that the aluminum 12-inch speaker with intuitive suspension design and this subwoofer has expertise in the function department.

I was disappointed, though. Although not expected, this subwoofer skips the SVS DSP accelerated controls, which provide access to many settings, including filters, integration options, and more. There is still something to appreciate. The phase knob is a simple explication to a large problem. It allows you to accurately determine the phase relationships for the maximum low level. I was a little disappointed with the feature set, but this is only true in the context of the DSP control found in the more expensive SVS variants, and if we look at it separately, the PB-2000 has a lot to offer in terms of features.

SVS PB-2000

The PB-2000 can compete with more expensive options in terms of performance. It’s hands down, one of the best-sounding subwoofers at this price, borrowing many of the features from the SVS Ultra line of subwoofers. The nominal frequency response of 17 Hz is easily achieved using a high-margin amplifier that delivers rich but detailed sound.

Tidying up the ultra-low end, 4-inch front port, with internal and external flashes for controlled bass. The combination of this and an incredibly dense woofer creates a low bar that slams but does not become unbearable. I never got tired of how low-end was here. In fact, I enjoy it, as it quickly picked up a budget and spat it out in one of the most beautiful ways I've heard.

Key specs

Pros

  • Able to play sound in an extended (unlike the classic) frequency range
  • Class D amplifier integrated
  • You will be hard-pressed to find a better bass value

Cons

  • This sub is solid but doesn’t live up to the hype
  • The case of you get what you pay for

Definitive Technology ProSub 1000

Our rating
7/10

Definitive Technology ProSub 1000

The compact Definitive Technology ProSub 1000 subwoofer is equipped with a 10-inch woofer mounted not on the front panel and an acoustically connected 10-inch passive radiator facing the floor. This solution allowed us to get deep, controlled, and unpainted bass, as well as greatly simplify the task of placing the subwoofer in the room.

The speaker diffuser is very light and rigid, which significantly reduces resonances, and is mounted on an elastic suspension of a special shape, which allows it to perform piston movements of large amplitude. The winding of the voice coil is made in such a way as to achieve maximum linearity of the diffuser stroke, and the robust basket has enlarged openings for free passage of airflow from the back of the diffuser. The magnetic system of the woofer is designed to bring from the amplifier to 750 watts of power, which provides exceptional reliability.

The amplifier in the subwoofer has output stages on discrete MOSFET transistors, made using the patented Infinite Power Source technology, and develops up to 300 watts. The amplifier circuit is mounted on printed circuit boards of "military" quality, using precision resistors and capacitors. The ProSub 1000 uses a dual protection system to prevent damage in the event of any emergency.

Definitive Technology ProSub 1000

The subwoofer has an LFE input, as well as high-level inputs for connecting to the acoustic outputs of an amplifier or receiver. There are also filtered acoustic outputs for connecting satellite speakers. The two-stage input filter allows you to adjust the sound of the subwoofer for precise matching with any main acoustics.

To eliminate the danger of coloring the sound at high listening volumes, the subwoofer housing has an almost monolithic design, with a very tight connection of the panels using special polymer glue. The front and back walls have an increased thickness, and the ProSub 1000 is also reinforced with numerous inner ties.
