Features

Onkyo TX-NR585 develops 80 watts on each of the seven channels (6 Ohms) and has a wide range of functions. The latter include support for the Dolby Atmos and DTS: X formats, as well as the acoustic output to Zone 2. This can be useful if you plan to sound another room with a pair of speakers.

Design and build

People have already noted the conservatism in the design of AV receivers, and the Onkyo TX-NR585 looks about the same as other devices of this class. All of them are black boxes with buttons and handles on the front panel. Perhaps, compared with Denon and Sony, Onkyo's case is slightly higher. Maintaining the front panel design means that the Onkyo TX-NR585 has one of my favorite features on any AV receiver - direct input selection buttons. Like many users, I tend to lose the remote control from time to time, and therefore I find it very useful to select the right signal source with a simple click on the button on the front panel. Denon has buttons for four inputs, which is quite enough for most situations.

Connectivity

Onkyo TX-NR585 supports a solid list of streaming technologies, including Chromecast, DTS Play-Fi, Spotify Connect, AirPlay and Bluetooth. Also in this model there is a proprietary FlareConnect technology with audio mirroring. This will allow you to broadcast the signal from the source of one room to others. This can be useful, for example, for listening to music from a vinyl player, or other analog source. However, DTS Play-Fi also has a feature like many others. The Onkyo model has as many as six HDMI inputs. The possibility of transmitting 4K video, including with HDR10 and Dolby Vision. The Onkyo TX-NR585 rear panel also has composite and component video inputs, six analog line inputs, a Phono, two optical and one coaxial inputs, as well as a USB port.

Setup

Speaking about ease of use, it is necessary to note the color menus with High Definition resolution, as well as a simple and reliable remote control.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • It has a wide range of inputs and streaming functions without sacrificing sound quality
  • Music and movie tracks sound great, especially when used with neutral acoustics

Cons

  • The unit still sounds better in the movie than when listening to music
