The Onkyo TX-NR656 supports revolutionary DTS: X and Dolby Atmos immersive technologies, operating in terms of “audio objects” rather than separate audio channels - the receiver optimally adjusts the sound. The Onkyo TX-NR656 amplification system is built on discrete circuits that allow the speakers to reproduce the most powerful and accurate sound. The high-quality AK4458 DAC, with 384 kHz / 32-bit and dual 32-bit DSP parameters, unleashes the full potential of any audio format through low distortion filtering technologies to ensure a clear sound. TX-NR656 upscales the lowest resolution of 1080p to 4K.
Design and build
Onkyo TX-NR656 has an elegant appearance. Buttons and knobs look minimalistic. In the center of the front panel is a black display with a green indication. Below the display are buttons for selecting signal sources. The connectors on the back are also made with high quality, all connections are very tight.
Connectivity
Based on Onkyo TX-NR656, users can create a simple multi-room system with independent signal transmission to another room. The audio signal is removed both from the linear (a separate DAC is used for it) and from the acoustic output.
Setup
AccuEQ Acoustic Calibration Technology, using the built-in microphone, detects and corrects speaker distance, volume level, and frequency response, creating a convincing sound environment.

Pros
- The GUI is very neat without unnecessary decorations
- The amplification has a noise reduction for clear and crisp sound
- TX-NR656 has a very thoughtful, competent layout. There are no extra wires, the wiring of the board is done very carefully, the transformer is securely screwed to the base
Cons
- Audio and video have not good synchronization. Sometimes the little delays appear
- The Bluetooth connection is not stable. A pairing mode it does not show up devices in a scan from any of my devices
- The device cannot be adjusted properly without a visual control
